Reflections on My First Year as CEO: Building Opportunity, Strengthening Community, and Enriching Lives

As Wellpoint Care Network celebrates 175 years of service, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to lead this organization and for the people who bring our mission to life every day. For generations, Wellpoint Care Network has stood alongside children, families, and communities during some of life’s most challenging moments. Stepping into this role has made the responsibility of that legacy feel both humbling and motivating.

What I have learned over the past year is that the strength of Wellpoint Care is not only our history, but the people who carry it forward. Every day, I see associates, clinicians, case managers, and community partners doing work that requires both professional excellence and deep compassion. Families today face complex challenges, including mental health needs, housing instability, economic pressures, and the lasting impacts of trauma. Meeting those challenges takes collaboration, creativity, and persistence.

It also takes purpose. The work our staff does is more than a profession. It is a vocation rooted in showing up for families when they need support, guidance, and hope most. I have also learned that our greatest progress happens when we listen to our staff, our partners, and the communities we serve. Their voices continue to shape how we grow and where we focus our efforts.

While one year is only the beginning of a longer journey, we have made important progress that positions Wellpoint Care for the future. We have been intentional about strengthening a mission-driven leadership team that supports our associates and prepares the organization for its next chapter. Strong leadership at every level matters, especially in work as complex and meaningful as ours.

We have also deepened strategic partnerships because no organization can address today’s challenges alone. By working more closely with healthcare providers, community organizations, government leaders, and philanthropic partners, we are strengthening both our sustainability and our ability to deliver on our mission. These partnerships are designed to complement one another’s strengths — aligning resources and expertise rather than competing for them. These collaborations allow us to expand services while staying grounded in purpose.

At the same time, our campus and partnerships are advancing a community hub model that brings services closer together for the families we serve. This approach is rooted in a simple idea: when organizations align around shared goals, access to care becomes easier, more coordinated, and more effective, while honoring dignity and respect.

While I am proud of the progress we have made, what excites me most is what lies ahead. Milwaukee has long been a city where people come together to solve big challenges, and supporting the well-being of children and families is one of the most important challenges we can take on together. Our work is guided by a simple belief: every child, every family, and every community deserves the opportunity to thrive. Investing in families is investing in Milwaukee’s future.

I am grateful to our associates, board members, partners, and supporters who stand with us in this work. Together, we are honoring Wellpoint Care’s legacy while shaping the next chapter of impact for generations to come. Strengthening families and building healthier communities is not something any single organization can do alone. It requires partners across philanthropy, business, government, and the community who believe that when we invest in children and families, we strengthen the future of our entire region.

If you share that belief, I invite you to join us. Lend your voice, your leadership, or your partnership to help expand what we can achieve together. At Wellpoint Care Network, we are proud to be part of that tradition and welcome others who want to help shape a stronger future for children and families across our community.

Thank you for being part of this mission.
