Preparing the Next Generation of Trauma-Informed Professionals: Wellpoint Care Network Launches Student Associate Program

At Wellpoint Care Network, our mission has always been to help children, families, and communities thrive. Now, that mission is extending its reach through a new and expanded opportunity for college students: the Student Associate program.
“The Student Associate program at Wellpoint Care Network gives college students hands-on experience in human services through internships or practicums,” said Marquita Smith, Talent Acquisition & Retention Specialist at Wellpoint Care Network. “Students work with professionals in social work, counseling, and family services, helping children and families heal from trauma. The program lets students apply classroom knowledge, build practical skills, and gain confidence in trauma-informed care.”
Participants are embedded within teams across the organization, gaining real-world exposure to the realities of Child and Family Well-Being or Mental Health work.
Students in the program can explore a wide range of focus areas, including:
- Case management
- Family preservation services
- Foster care licensing
- Supervised independent living programs
- Community-based mental health services
- Administrative and program support roles
This variety allows students to better understand where their interests and strengths align while building a well-rounded foundation in human services.
“Interns will have the opportunity to observe and support case management and family services, learn about Wisconsin’s child welfare system, assist with research and program development, support documentation and case record systems, and collaborate across interdisciplinary teams,” added Smith.

For many students, the program is more than just a semester-long experience, it’s a steppingstone into a meaningful career.
“The organization has had Student Associates who transition into full-time roles after completing their internships,” says Smith. “Employment is not guaranteed, but the program acts as a pipeline for future talent, allowing students to gain experience and determine whether they want to pursue a long-term career with the organization.”
That was the case for Priscilla Purnell, now a Family Preservation Specialist at Wellpoint Care Network.
“My undergraduate internship experience at Wellpoint Care Network allowed me to further gain knowledgeable skills when advocating for families and children,” she says. “I felt supported and surrounded by passionate and dedicated professionals. During my two-semester internship, I grew into my role as a Family Preservation Specialist with stronger confidence and education. I am grateful for the resources and training provided as I build my social work career.”
Other students have also been drawn to the organization for the following reasons:
- Mission-driven work that creates real community impact
- A strong trauma-informed care framework
- Opportunities for professional growth and development
- A workplace culture that prioritizes wellness
- Direct engagement with children, families, and community partners
In addition to the Student Associate program, Wellpoint Care also offers clinical practicums, job shadowing, fellowships, and specialized training in trauma-informed care and child welfare systems.
Applications for the fall semester are now open. Students ready to gain hands-on experience, build meaningful connections, and make a difference are encouraged to apply today.
