Community in Action: Rallying Together to Prepare Students for the Upcoming School Year

When you’re working to create a world where children and families have a clearer path to their fullest potential, the more partners the better.
That’s why when Wellpoint Care Network heard that backpacks stored in the basement of Benediction Lutheran Church‘s education building were ruined when this past weekend historic storm caused a sewer backup, the organization knew they needed to help.
“As a community hub, our goal is to help as many children and families across Wisconsin as we can,” said Andrew Bonner, Community Partnerships & Volunteer Coordinator at Wellpoint Care Network.
Wellpoint Care Network recently held our 4th annual Back to School Bash, where we collect supplies in order to prepare students in our community for the upcoming school year. The Bash is a great example of community in action, where thousands of families come together for an afternoon of food, fun and resources.

“When we heard about the unfortunate event at Benediction Lutheran Church, we knew we wanted to step in and partner to give away backpacks to help our neighbors,” added Bonner. “It was a great opportunity to extend the reach of our Back to School Bash and we were excited to provide another 100 students with backpacks and school supplies.”
Pastor Don Hougard of Benediction Lutheran Church says the backpacks will be distributed to children of the church and community members this weekend.
“When you think about it, the backpack and the supplies inside of it is probably about $30-40,” added Hougard. “When you multiply that by three or four kids, that’s over $100. So, this really is a big help to the families.”
After having to get rid of several dozen water-damaged backpacks, Hougard says he was amazed by the generosity of the Milwaukee community.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. We’ve also found some other places that will be able to use the backpacks we don’t give out. So, the generosity that others have given to us, we’re looking forward to sharing with others as well.”
