My Wellpoint Care Why: Board Member Monica Nichol

Having just moved to Milwaukee, Monica Nichol was looking for ways to get involved and make an impact in her new city.
“I was interested in learning about the needs of the community,” she said. “That’s when one of my business partners introduced me to Capitol West Academy (a public charter school formerly housed on the Wellpoint Care Network campus). Mentorship has always been important to me, and working with kids just brings a little extra joy, so it was a natural fit.”
After serving on the Capitol West Academy Board for a few years, Nichol extended her service to the community and joined Wellpoint Care Network’s Board in early 2020.
“I love Milwaukee,” added Nichol. “I want to see this city succeed. I want to be part of an organization that is trying to make our community better — Wellpoint Care Network does just that. We’re not just putting a Band-Aid on the issues, we’re diving into the root causes, bringing people together, and creating real connection.”
For Nichol, that connection piece is her ‘Wellpoint Care Why.’
“Growing up, I was part of a family structure that benefited from others helping us. I looked externally for a lot of advice and resources. I saw firsthand how sometimes it just takes one person to believe in you and support you to have a positive ripple effect across your life.”
That’s one of the many reasons Nichol believes in making mental health care a normal part of everyday life.
“When you’re looking at how to be the best version of yourself, it’s so important to heal your mind in conjunction with your body. I think that’s the backbone of what’s going to make families stronger, and in turn, communities stronger.”
As Wellpoint Care Network celebrates 175 years of service and impact, we’re creating pathways to a thriving tomorrow — for children, families and communities across Wisconsin. Because the need for quality mental health services is so vast, we’ve made our approach to provide healing services just as far-reaching and in-depth.
“Wellpoint Care has done such a good job meeting people where they are — schools, virtually, at events,” adds Nichol. “We’re always looking at the needs of the community and adapting to what they need. I think that’s what’s made us so strong and how we can continue to support families, hopefully for another 175 years.”

For Nichol, the importance and impact of this work is what keeps her motivated to continue serving on the Wellpoint Care Network Board, in addition to serving as Chair of the Advancement Committee.
“You end up getting more back than you give,” she adds. “It’s so rewarding trying to make Milwaukee the best place it can be.”
