Transforming Systems Through Trauma Informed Care
The need for trauma-informed therapists, counselors, case managers and first responders has never been higher. But as a spike in demand takes its toll on caregivers, patient outcomes can suffer. To better distribute the responsibility, we need to rethink how Trauma Informed Care education can transform existing systems.
Wellpoint Care Network has decades of collective experience in trauma-informed case management, youth residential treatment, family preservation and mental health services. We’ve gained substantial direct practice experience by guiding children and families through their trauma-informed healing journeys, and have established a proven, nationally-renowned trauma-informed practice and culture.

The Importance of a Trauma-informed Approach
Study Shows How Trauma Informed Care Positively Impacts Child Welfare Outcomes
From 2013-2016, researchers followed about 600 children in Milwaukee County’s child welfare system. This study provided quantitative evidence of Trauma Informed Care’s ability to impact the child welfare system. Practicing in a trauma-responsive manner improved placement stability and permanence, and led to better overall staff satisfaction.

In 2018, special correspondent Oprah Winfrey traveled to Milwaukee, WIsconsin to learn how Wellpoint Care Network (then known as SaintA) was using innovative trauma-informed practices to help teenager Alisha Fox learn to overcome past abuse. “If you aren’t focused on trauma, you are focused on the wrong thing.”

We led a Greater Milwaukee Foundation-funded research project, which showed improvements in three areas of child welfare outcomes when the Wellpoint Care Trauma Informed Care protocol is followed:
increased stability
improved permanency for children
better support and collaboration among staff
These experiences have led us to work closely with other child- and family-systems leaders in child welfare, human services, law enforcement, family court judges, community centers, and more.

Recently, Wellpoint Care trainers and consultants were able to help Racine County Human Services turn things around for children and families by embedding Trauma Informed Care practices into a wide swath of county services.
First, we trained Child Welfare case managers in Trauma Informed Care and educators in Trauma Sensitive Schools (TSS). Later, we expanded our Seven Essential Ingredients training to include local police officers, district attorneys, judges and others who routinely meet parents and juveniles at significant crossroads in their lives.
The goal was to keep children safe at home and out of the system – and it worked. The number of children in out-of-home care dropped by more than 50% between 2017 and 2020 (from 400 children a month to about 175.) And, family reunifications also improved significantly.
