Changing the Way We Serve Children and Families

Throughout the human services field, at one time or another, we’ve all seen it: as the number of cases climb, the workload begins to take a toll on staff and caregivers. Inevitably, outcomes suffer. We know this because we aren’t just trainers and consultants, we’re active practitioners. That’s why we’ve created a better approach.

Wellpoint Care Network’s Trauma Informed Care training will give you a better understanding of the social, emotional, physiological and developmental effects of trauma on the children, families and communities you serve. Application of our Seven Essential Ingredients (7ei) can help you better understand the obstacles related to significant trauma histories in children, youth, and families — and overcome them.

A Trauma-informed Approach to Human Services

Trauma-informed practices can help your team, department or organization:

  • Appreciate the frequency of adverse experiences in people’s lives and respond to their behavior from a trauma-informed perspective.
  • Prevent future adversity and related behaviors.
  • Learn practical techniques that inspire a sense of purpose, belonging and safety to enhance relational well-being.
  • Implement developmentally-informed activities to enhance the regulatory capacity of both staff and those in care.
  • Appreciate the connection between caregiver capacity and outcomes.
  • Recognize Historical and Inter-generational trauma and equity as central to understanding trauma.

“Social support is not the same as merely being in the presence of others. The critical issue is reciprocity. For our physiology to calm down, heal and grow we need a visceral feeling of safety.”

Trauma Informed Care Creates Transformation in Brown County

Tana Koss and Heather McGriff work for Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin, a non-profit human services agency offering programs to support children, teens and adults during challenges and transitions in their lives. The duo were first certified in Wellpoint Care’s trauma-informed framework in 2016, and have led more than 25 trainings in Northeast Wisconsin since.

The results speak for themselves: Family Services’ residential program has experienced a significant drop in both physical interventions and police contacts, and staff retention and happiness have both improved.

“When we committed to being a trauma-informed agency, we knew it was going to be a journey, not a destination,” says Koss. “We’ve stuck with it because it’s vetted, it gets updated and we have the resource of experts, which has felt supportive.”

Maria Andrade

Maria Andrade

Vice President of Child and Family Well-being

I began my career at Wellpoint Care in 2009. The diversity of the work that I do ensures that no day is like any other. I have the opportunity to lead teams who are focused on supporting the work of our mission — because they understand that ultimately the work we do, whether internally or externally, impacts the families we are here to serve. Wellpoint Care has created an environment that allows me to thrive professionally, while supporting my work-life balance in the various seasons of both my professional and personal life. We are allowed opportunities to be innovative and creative together in how we achieve goals while never losing sight of our mission. It’s encouraging to see the result of the organization listening to feedback by providing space for us to come together as an agency and have conversations around diversity, equity and inclusion, and then be a part of the work towards change.

I am a first-generation Puerto Rican, born in the United States and first in my family to have graduated college and continued on to receive master’s degree. I’m bilingual and fully fluent in Spanish. I oversee the Mentoring Program and am a part many other diversity-related committees. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my loved ones, reading, volunteering and being outside.
