Creating a Trauma-informed First Response

Workers on the forefront of crises face unique pressures, encountering high-tension situations and making life-or-death decisions every day. The intense emotions and unrelenting stress can take a heavy toll on those serving their community. It’s a heavy load, but it can be lightened by learning trauma-informed tools that focus on regulation, caregiver capacity and caring connections.

Wellpoint Care Network’s Trauma Informed Care training can help First Responders of all kinds by teaching them the neuroscience behind the behaviors and responses of trauma survivors. This not only promotes well-being and better overall performance for the workers, but also helps them provide community-centered response tactics to help diffuse difficult situations.

Healthier Systems for First Responders, Healthier Communities.

In the normal course of their duties, First Responders often need to act as law enforcement, doctors, psychologists, social workers and teachers. But they’re rarely given the tools and training needed to succeed in these roles.

That’s why Wellpoint Care Network has built specialized Trauma Informed Care trainings for First Responders and those in Law Enforcement.

Understanding trauma and its impact on a person’s development and function can provide useful insight for those working with people in crisis or those under extreme stress.

By working from the same trauma-informed playbook as child welfare agencies, early childhood development programs and K-12 schools, First Responders can become a vital part of a community network of support for those facing adversity and chronic instability.

“Trauma is one of the few root causes that affects a significant number of incidents First Responders are called to — and it can become the root cause of a similar amount of behavioral and health challenges that First Responders experience.”

TIM GROVE, WELLPOINT CARE NETWORK

The Prevalence of Trauma in First Responders

As a national leader in Trauma Informed Care, Wellpoint Care Network recognizes the need to connect our trauma-informed training to the unique needs and struggles of first responders, who are at much higher risk than the general population of developing a number of trauma-related outcomes, including mental and behavioral health and overall well-being.

Although estimates vary, the overall rates of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are more comparable to those rates of military personnel and combat veterans.

Average Lifetime Rates of PTSD:

  • General Public: 6%
  • Law Enforcement Officers: 6-32%
  • Emergency Medical Technicians: 9-22%
  • Fire Fighters: 17-32%

Maria Andrade

Maria Andrade

Vice President of Child and Family Well-being

I began my career at Wellpoint Care in 2009. The diversity of the work that I do ensures that no day is like any other. I have the opportunity to lead teams who are focused on supporting the work of our mission — because they understand that ultimately the work we do, whether internally or externally, impacts the families we are here to serve. Wellpoint Care has created an environment that allows me to thrive professionally, while supporting my work-life balance in the various seasons of both my professional and personal life. We are allowed opportunities to be innovative and creative together in how we achieve goals while never losing sight of our mission. It’s encouraging to see the result of the organization listening to feedback by providing space for us to come together as an agency and have conversations around diversity, equity and inclusion, and then be a part of the work towards change.

I am a first-generation Puerto Rican, born in the United States and first in my family to have graduated college and continued on to receive master’s degree. I’m bilingual and fully fluent in Spanish. I oversee the Mentoring Program and am a part many other diversity-related committees. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my loved ones, reading, volunteering and being outside.
