Trauma Sensitive Schools Training

As educators, administrators and support staff, we know you share our vision for every child and family to thrive, both as individuals and within the community. That’s why we’ve applied our expertise in the impact of adversity on the developing brain to create an innovative approach geared specifically to the unique needs and struggles of educators, aides, counselors and paraprofessionals.

Wellpoint Care Network’s Trauma Sensitive Schools practice acknowledges the lasting impact of childhood adversities — such as abuse, neglect, violence or a family history of mental illness — on a student’s ability to succeed in learning. This approach infuses schools with the core values of safety, trust and collaboration and empowers educators to recognize common (and often, hidden) barriers to learning.

The Trauma Sensitive Schools Approach

Experience and research have proven the strong link between a child’s mental health and their ability to learn. When implemented within a classroom, school or district, Trauma Sensitive Schools training results in improved academic learning and more positive social engagement.

  • Helps remove barriers to educational success.
  • Changes the perspective from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you, and how can I support you?”
  • Provides sensory and regulation-based activities.
  • Strengthens relationships to help students build resilience.
  • Helps students find their sense of purpose and direction.
  • Encourages self-care so you can be at your best.

“The more healthy relationships a child has, the more likely he will be to recover from trauma and thrive. Relationships are the agents of change, and the most powerful therapy is human love.”

DR. Bruce Perry, The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog

Real Change, Not Just Time-Outs and Fidget Spinners.

Todd Elementary School in Beloit, Wisconsin participated in Wellpoint Care’s Trauma Sensitive Schools training and coaching that focused on regulation, reason to be and relationships, and has seen small practices grow into a powerful classroom culture where students support one another.

“The feeling of our school building changed,” says Todd Elementary teacher Brice Gustafson. “Decisions and policies shifted as they were created and administered with a trauma-sensitive lens.”

Teen Mental Health in Wisconsin

Many students have unaddressed mental health needs keeping them from success. As a national leader in Trauma Informed Care, Wellpoint Care Network recognizes the need to connect our trauma-informed training to the unique needs and struggles of educators. According to the Center for Disease Control:

  • 52% of students reported feeling very anxious, tense, scared or like something bad was going to happen
  • 34% of those same students reported feeling sad and hopeless
  • 18% of students reported having seriously considered suicide

Proactive Approaches That Benefit All Students.

Prior to Trauma Sensitive Schools training, educators at Edgewood Elementary School in Greenfield were aware that stress and trauma impacted learning, but their interventions were mostly reactive — occurring after dysregulation had already impacted behavior.

Now, says Edgewood Principal Meg Boyd, teachers are equipped with proactive strategies to support students’ self-regulation, like breaks and movement activities to help adjust energy levels.

“We’re able to start using these techniques before the problems start happening, and we’re not seeing the same problems over and over.”
