Green Stormwater Infrastructure Project Continues on Wellpoint Care Network Campus
Progress continues on a Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) project on Wellpoint Care Network’s campus.
A groundbreaking took place last month and we are happy to report that the project is on track for completion on October 8, 2024.
During the first month of construction, crews:
- Finished installing erosion control (the practice of preventing or controlling wind or water erosion)
- Removed trees, stumps and shrubs
- Started removing topsoil
- Swale and pond excavation (swales are shallow, broad and vegetated channels designed to store and/or convey runoff and remove pollutants)
Swale and pond excavation will continue for the next few weeks, along with stockpiling fill with compacting.
For the remainder of June and into July, there will be approximately 15 to 25 trucks per day hauling materials to and from the site. The trucks will use North 88th Street and West Lisbon Avenue to access the construction site.

ABOUT THE GSI PROJECT
The Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) project is a collaborative effort between Wellpoint Care Network and the Fresh Coast Protection Partnership, a Community-Based Partnership between Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) and Corvias Infrastructure Solutions (CIS).
The GSI project is part of a larger multi-year effort to transform Wellpoint Care’s historic campus into a place where families, neighbors and community partners will find trauma-informed social services, mental health resources and a place to connect, collaborate and care for themselves and one another.
Once complete, the GSI project is designed to capture at least one million gallons of stormwater and includes constructed wetlands, bioswales and native landscaping.
